Ladakh is Jammu western tourists, which used to be called ‘Western Tibet’ or ‘Little Tibet’. It spans the Great Himalayan and Karakoram mountain ranges and the upper Indus River Valley. Ladakh has been also the described as ‘Moon Land’, ‘Magic Land’, and ‘Mysterious Land’ for its unique landscape and exquisite culture. With its unmoved character and spell-binding natural beauty Ladakh attracts the more intense and adventurous of travelers.
Its landscape, sky, shooting stars, silence, wizened faces, rosy cheeks, dragons and Zen – everything also makes Ladakh a quite place to visit. If you are visiting Kashmir don’t fail to make the trip to beautiful land of Ladakh. Truly with its ancient gompas perched on soaring hill-tops, shattered looking landscapes splashed with marvelous patches of green, ancient palaces clinging to sheer rock walls, Ladakh offers a heaven like look. Besides, the delightful and immensely colorful Ladakhi people will make your holiday a memorable experience.
Sightseeing in Ladakh
Leh: Sightseeing in Ladakh begins with a tour of Leh Palace, counts amongst the popular places to see in Ladakh. The major attraction is the nine storey Leh Palace (Built by Sing ge Namgyal in 16th century) and Tsemo (Victory Peak) built by Tashi Namgyal. The other places of importance are the Sanskar Monastery, Shanti Stupa Zoravar Fort etc. It is also the main business centre of Ladakh.
Dha-Hanu: It is located to the south west of Leh, around 163 Kms. It is the Land of the “Drok-Pa”an Indo Aryan race. In this area, you will find a number of villages. However, tourists are allowed to visit the villages of Dah and Hanu only. Being on lower altitude Dhahanu is warmer than Leh. Their cultural and religious practices are totally different from the rest of Ladakh. Bon-Chos believe in an ancient Pre-Buddhist animist religion known as “Bon-Chos”.
Central Ladakh: This is a very attractive area with plenty of Monasteries and villages. The major attractions are the nine storey Palace (Leh), the Palace Museum of Stok, Hemis, Thiksey, Chemrey, Phyang, Lamayuru, Spituk, Ridzong, Alchi Monasteries and villages of Basgo, Nimoo, Sanskar etc. This is very short information given above.
Buddhist Monasteries: Buddhist monasteries are the most unique feature of Ladakh. The Hemis monastery is the largest monastery of Ladakh with an exquisite painting of Lord Buddha, displayed once in 2 yrs. Then, there is the Shey monastery with a gold plated copper statue of Buddha. Alchi, Lamayuru, Likir, Spituk, Thikse, Stakana, Sankar, etc are some of the other popular monasteries in Ladakh.
Wildlife: Ladakh is home to some of the most exotic wildlife species. Several flowering plants, a dozen important mammals and over a hundred species of birds are found here in this rugged terrain. Thriving on the minimal vegetation, poor shelter, rocky terrain and bitter cold are the wild animals like Yak, Nyan, Urial, Churu, Ibex, Snow Leopard, Bharal, etc. Ladakh also plays host to a number of resident as well as migratory birds.
Leh Mosque: It was constructed under the threat of military action by the Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb which prompted King Deldan Namgyal to build the mosque in 1661. Leh Mosque, in the main Bazaar, is an architectural beauty. The mosque is green and white in color and reflects a mixture of Islamic and Tibetan architecture and can accommodate more than 500 people. The mosque is open only to men.
