Recycling Your Household Waste

Recycling is now becoming part of our everyday lives in the UK. With most councils providing recycling bins for household products such as paper, tins and glass, we could however be doing so much more to help the environment. Whenever we re-use something we save the energy associated with manufacturing a new one.

Did you know that to manufacture one cotton T-shirt it could take up to 800 litres of water??

The other problem is landfill sites, which create CO2 emissions, and with the growing population in the UK there wouldn’t be enough space for all of our waste.

Over two thirds of household waste can be recycled. Many of those items include plastics, glass, steel and paper but things such as old laptops, PC’s and mobile phones can also be recycled. PC’s and laptops can be corrected and sent to schools in developing countries, something the schools could not normally afford.

Household waste such as vegetable peelings, egg boxes, teabags and shredded paper can be turned into compost, so rather that going out and spending money on compost from your local garden centre you can have your own at home free!! If you do not have a garden most councils run a green waste collection service so that those products can be turned into compost elsewhere.

Other simple ways of recycling can be to just take your unwanted clothes to charity shops where they can be purchased reducing the CO2 emissions used to manufacture new clothes and also fund the good charity work being done.

There are many recycled products to purchase and these include: Wine glasses, clothing, bin bags, newspapers, copier paper and furniture. When purchasing these items look out for labels, which show how much recycled content, the products have.

Many important things can be made from recycled materials such as parts for cars and aeroplanes.

Many artists and furniture developers have come up with fun and funky ways of recycling, such as using old CD’s to make chairs and old guitar cases for bookshelves.
